Surrounded by the implements of women’s work, this Indian Girl stands before her cooking fire. She made her leather moccasins, but her blue linen dress was obtained in trade and then personally decorated with elk’s teeth. Plains Indian women accompanied the buffalo hunters, skinned the hides, butchered the meat and prepared it for travel. These were strong and sturdy women up to every task.
Perhaps that is why Doug chose his mother to model for this painting. Note that the beading on the leather knife sheath, the belt, and the bag as well as the trade-beads necklace are done in red and white against the blue dress. Ms. Hall served her country in the Women’s Army Corp and is a strong patriot often wearing red, white and blue. In the tradition of Whistler, this is Doug Hall’s tribute to his Mother who can also shoot, skins hides and prepares game. Like GIRL IN THE BLUE DRESS, she is up to each task.
